HKEX (00388.HK) held a shareholders' meeting. Chairman Laura Cha said HKEX continued to demonstrate resilience and strength in the past year. Whilst the global financial markets will continue to be affected by the economic environment and geopolitics, she is confident that HKEX's enhanced focus on its unique role in connecting China to the world will strengthen the competitiveness of the Hong Kong market.

Cha noted that her six-year tenure as Chairman of the HKEX would end after the shareholders' meeting and that she was honoured to be appointed for the position. She thanked the team for achieving a number of important milestones and initiatives, including the significant development and enhancement of interconnectivity projects and the diversification of product ecosystems in the face of continuing global challenges.

In response to shareholders' expectation that HKEX should increase its dividend frequency to quarterly, Cha said HKEX pays dividends twice a year and believed that many shareholders are more interested in the value of the dividend than whether the dividend is paid quarterly or semi-annually. She added that it is up to each company to decide whether or not to pay a dividend quarterly.

Regarding shareholders' concern about the large proportion of HKEX's investment income, the recently-appointed CEO Bonnie Chan said the high interest rate environment bodes well for investment income, but it also puts pressure on the market trading volume, as capital flows to the money market. In the future, HKEX will open up more channels for income generation, including expansions of its information business, so as to make its performance even better, Chan noted.
